REIFEL, Stuart (Ed) Theory in adjoining matter and Out. Westport, CT: Ablex Publishing, 2001 434pp $4500 (p) $11500 (h)
Theory in words immediately preceding or following and Out furthers discourse and understanding about the involved phenomenon we know as play. Play, as a human and animal activity, can be understood in confines of cultural, social, evolutionary, psychological, and philosophical perspectives. This effort necessarily includes inquiry from a range of disciplines, including history, sociology, psychology education, biology, anthropology, and leisure studies. This mass presents 22 chapters from those disciplines, and includes sections covering foundations and theory of play, sex and children's play, theory of mind, adult-child play, and classroom play. Scholarly analyses and reports of research from diverse disciplines amplify our understanding of play in Western and non-Western societies.
