Envision a cadre of leading scientists and practitioners working collaboratively forward a highly focused program of education research that is tightly coupl with practice. often of the research is carried abroad in school settings. Research influences educational practice, and the results in practice inform further research efforts. The Strategic Education Research Partnership (SERP) is designed to make this vision a reality. It recommends a large-scale, coherent program of research and unravelling that would put the point to be solved or settleds of educational practice at its center and focus in succession all stages necessary to influence practice. These include theory testing, the progressive growth and evaluation of instructional programs, the studious mood of practice in context, and attention to taking innovations to scale. This work explains the features of SERP and the ways in which it would address the major challenges of linking research and practice. It is a call to mobilize resources and political will, the power of scientific research, and the expertise of educators, to create a more effective research and unfolding program for improving student learning.
